It is a common sight to see a Fresh water Generator coated with  Grease.Many  optimistic Engineers believe that  one can apply grease on SUSPECTED areas to prevent AIR INGRESS into the shell and thus improve the Vacuum and the overall production.

Many would dismiss this as MISPLACED optimism.Just as a determined   sailor can find his way to the nearest bar in a foreign port,so does AIR find its way to reach a place where there is Vacuum.

Best methods to make a FWG, AIR TIGHT –

Arrange to pressurize the FWG shell with water-ONLY STATIC HEAD-say by filling it with a stand pipe connected to the purge/vent cock or any other suitable place

Alternatively  FWG Shell can be filled up by gravity if draft permits.(Some manipulations may be required to be done to ensure the flow of water into the shell).NEVER PRESSURISE WITH A RUNNING PUMP WITH OVERBOARD VALVE SHUT.

Every  drop of water leak can be SEEN and once this is rectified followed by a positive confirmation test, you can see a drastic change in the performance of FWG .

Needless to say,it is obvious that clean tube stacks of evaporator and Condenser also affect the performance and Vaccum of Fresh water generator.

 SAY NO TO GREASY FWG AND  MAKE SURE THE HEAT AVAILABLE DOES NOT GO WASTE

NO MORE RATIONING AND FILLING UP BUCKETS , ON BOARD . J
