Open door policy

Original Creation - 20-1-2014

Operating a ship is all about TEAM WORK and it works best with Transparency and Openness

Anything behind closed doors promotes suspicion, rumor- mongering and guessing games.

Typical secrecies occasionally observed on board would be senior operational level Engineers and Officers withholding information from juniors just to protect their SUPERIORITY and importance..

-- Juniors Officers/ Engineers withholding operational level defects observed during watch keeping from their seniors, for whatever the cause or FEAR.

-- Information on Some special TRICKS involved with operating/ starting certain equipment’s may often be held up ones sleeve to gain importance as an EXPERT.

But withholding information about these tricks may  not only spoil the TEAMWORK environment which is required but may also backfire at the person practicing these methods.

Nobody wants to be woken up at 0200 hrs to rectify a fault in Purifier even though one takes pride in being recognized as a PURIFIER Expert.

Concept of training the juniors onboard for operational efficiency and ones own comfort evolved gradually with the reduction in manpower.... ofcourse there were always a few legends which one would remember with fondness for all the mentoring they did to us in our early days

--Socializing and making friends , teaching ,sharing information etc become very important ingredients of TEAM BUILDING and go on to make a HAPPY SHIP.

This aspect is found a bit wanting in the present environs of shipping.. Thanks to the VCD players, DVD players and LAPTOPS.

A gala time in the SMOKE Room with all members of the ship enhance the mental health of the sailors also paving way to establish LONG TERM friendships ( Beyond the Gangway)which may come in very handy in ones career in the distant future.
